In Remembrance of the Nakba... Launch of the Campaign “That's Not Its Name”
2013-06-14
On Wednesday, May 15th, the 65th Anniversary of the Nakba (the Palestinian name for the 1948 Arab-Israeli War meaning “Catastrophe”), a youth group calling itself “Youth of Memory” launched a media campaign under the slogan “That's Not Its Name” as part of a series campaigns organized by I'lam.
The campaign confronts Israeli policies aimed to obliterate Palestinian identity and memory after the rise of the Israeli state's efforts to destroy the resources of Palestinians, first and foremost Palestinian lands that were confiscated in various ways.
The campaign aims to remind the third and fourth generations after the Nakba of the Arabic names of the Palestinian cities and towns whose populations were expelled in 1948 by the Israeli army, and whose names the Israeli state has worked to Judaize in an attempt to erase their Arab identities and names from the memory of the Palestinian people, who refuse to forget.
The populations of more than 530 Palestinian towns were expelled, including the major Arab cities of Jaffa, Haifa, Lyd, Ashkelon, and Tiberias.
This campaign is part of a special project to produce information campaigns organized by I'lam following lectures and workshops by professionals and specialists in the fields of human rights, journalism, and public campaigns. The result has been five campaigns, showcasing the various campaign issues.
The campaign video was filmed on the land of the destroyed town of Safuriya, with the following participants: Nadira Abu Dubai-Saadi, Maysam Canaan-Tayeh, Hanan Amara, Haya Abu Ahmed, Mina Jabareen, Muhammad Abdulrawouf, Iman Nijim, writer Nirmeen Mawed, editor Wasim Murad, and cinematographer Muhammad Shanawi.
Anyone wishing to learn more about the depopulated villages and cities can visit the Facebook page, and can contribute to the project by adding new names of Palestinian towns that were destroyed:
