I'lam Publishes Rights Guide for Media Professionals
“Through interviews with journalists, it became evident that it was necessary to issue a book explaining the rights of journalists; covering both the rights related to working conditions and the professional standards and laws which govern the profession of journalism.”
I'lam recently published a new book titled “Guide to the Rights of Journalists” which contains the laws, regulations, and restrictions regarding the work of the press in Israel.
The book was prepared by the legal adviser to I'lam, Alaa Abdullah, along with the Media Monitoring Project coordinated by Samah Basoul, under the supervision of the I'lam general manager, Amal Jamal. The book includes three sections: the first section, “Worker's Rights”, provides an overall summary of the rights of workers. The second section, “Freedom of the Press”, addresses freedom of journalistic work, the international status of this freedom, and its limitations. The third section, “Fact Checking and the Reality of Journalism”, addresses the information challenges facing the press during their work. It also includes case studies of the kind of challenges facing journalists and reporters, in order to clarify laws, legislation, how they are enforced on the ground, and their impact on the profession of journalism.
This guide comes as an update to the work in the book “Professional Challenges of Journalism: Between Journalistic Independence and the Pressure of Working Conditions” which was published at the end of 2011 and covered the important challenges facing workers in the field of journalism. Through interviews with journalists, it became evident that it was necessary to issue a book to explain the rights of journalists, covering rights related both to working conditions and the professional standards and laws which govern the profession of journalism.
I'lam welcomes any media professionals looking for more information to contact the center by telephone or email. It is worth mentioning that I'lam will be interested in obtaining the largest possible number of journalists and reporters in the guide. This is in order to continue the center's efforts towards the realization of media rights, both for journalists themselves and the means by which they work, and ensuring the continued operation of the press in a professional manner without exposing themselves to legal violations or liabilities.
