Ilam Organizes a Tour for Journalists in Hebron
2013-07-05
On 3 July 2013, the Ilam Media Center organized a tour for journalists in the city of Hebron. Sixteen journalists from various media outlets attended the tour and were guided by Yehuda Shaul of the Israeli organization, “Breaking the Silence”.
Shaul is one of the early founders of the “Breaking the Silence” organization, which trains former soldiers in the Israeli army to become tour guides in one of the areas with the most violations in the West Bank, specifically the area in Hebron under occupation, which is named H2. So as to shed light on the violations and attacks they formerly imposed on Palestinians to terrorize and evict them, under the pretext of maintaining the security of a group of settlers.
The tour included stops at sites, where Shaul says that night after night, shells are fired on a densely populated area in order to create a state of fear among the Palestinians in the city, and impose a fallacious Israeli sovereignty. Shaul explained that the “Missiles kill everything within an eight meter radius, and injure everyone in the area within a sixteen meter radius!”
The tour started from the Piazza of the extremist “Kahane”, with Shaul reviewing the history of the Israeli occupation of Hebron to the decision to start settling in it. The tour continued to the Shuhada (Martyrs) Street, where he reviewed the successive Israeli decisions to close the street and “sterilize” it from Palestinians; thereby closing all shops and stores in the Street, which were a source of livelihood for thousands of Palestinians.
Shaul spoke of thousands of families who have been evicted; noting that the remainder lives in a prison, where they are forbidden to leave except under special orders and exceptional methods, thus preventing the Palestinians from leaving their homes from the main entrance.
Shaul reviewed approaches to the Supreme Court carried out by several active civil society organizations, revealing that the army does not only commit violations, but does not issue military orders to carry out these violations, in order to avoid legal recourse. Therefore, no complaints can be lodged about decisions that do not exist on the ground!
During the tour, the journalists met with a number of Palestinian militants who outlined the violations they face, valuing the presence of journalists among them. Activist Issa Omar said that it was the first time that a group of reporters from inside the green line have visited them. This meeting is important for two reasons, firstly for Palestinian ties and secondly to expose the Israeli violations.
The tour concluded with a meeting with the Islamic Waqf in the Cave of the Patriarchs, where the journalists were presented with a review of what the Mosque is going through since 1994, and especially after the massacre carried out by Goldstein.
It is worth noting that the tour comes within the framework of media education and vocational training carried out by the Ilam Center for fellow journalists.
