2015-10-16
Over the past four days, representatives of I’lam participated in the International Federation of Freedom of Expression (IFeX) Conference, which was held on the island of Trinidad.
The conference was opened with a series of meetings and panel discussions about the Federation and partner institutions, which addressed the issue of freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and the work of civil and human rights organizations in various countries of the world.
On the second day of the conference a series of panel discussions took place in which representatives of different human rights organizations presented their work. I’lam participated in two of these and gave a comprehensive overview of the Center’s work on campaigning for human rights and the promotion of freedom of expression through theater work. The conference drew attention to hate speech in the media, the defense of prisoners of conscience, impunity and campaigning for change.
The third and fourth days focused on the nomination and election of the new General Council of IFeX, and the launch of a campaign of "No Impunity". This campaign calls for action to prosecute and punish violators of human rights and freedom of expression.
I’lam was able to meet with a number of representatives of associations and international institutions with the aim of networking and exchanging experiences and knowledge. I’lam met with representatives of Arab institutions in the field of human rights and media freedom from Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Bahrain. These meetings were conducted with a view to develop understanding and create a horizon of communication and interaction on common issues and concerns. Additionally, I’lam discussed campaigns and joint activities serving the public throughout the Arab countries.
