One major goal of the project is to provide constructive criticism to Arab media outlets in order to maintain journalistic integrity. Another goal is to highlight violations of ethics by Arab media outlets in order to emphasize the obligation to behave in a professionally responsible manner.
The project also presents journalistic coverage patterns to the general public and to Arab media professionals providing vital information regarding the development of Arab society and the way this development is expressed in the media. The project also strives to enhance the field of research in Arab society and to supply it with studies on the Arab media.
The project for monitoring Arab media outlets began in 2006. Up to this point, only national and local Arab newspapers were monitored, however in the future, I’lam strives to become more influential outside this sphere. Issues important to Palestinian society are selected and covered, with scrutiny placed on the formation patterns of how Palestinians are depicted. Data answering certain questions is examined quantitatively as well as qualitatively, and a comprehensive report about coverage tendencies is formulated. A written report is then written in Arabic and translated into Hebrew and English.
The monitoring projecting has up to this point released four reports by I’lam, namely:
-The Representation of Women in Arab Commercial Newspapers in Israel (2006).
-Arab Leadership in the News of Arab Commercial Newspapers in Israel (2006).
-Still Subjugated: the Representation of Women in National Arab Newspapers (2010).
- The Marginality of Human Rights Discourse in the Local Arab Press in Israel (2012).
Arab media monitoring reports are distributed to journalists and editors, media experts at colleges and universities, media teachers in schools, university graduates in media subjects and media researchers.
